You may be old enough to remember back in the fifties when there was the
notion of doing away with power meters because nuclear power was going to be
so cheap.  I don't believe it could ever come to that.  But, with
sufficiently developed technology, economies of scale, and reasonable
government regulations, we could easily achieve the current levels of energy
costs into perpetuity.
