...it's been my experience that before you ruin the pistons, you 
usually squish babbitt from under the rod bearings which results in 
knocks.   That's if you don't bend the connecting rods 
first.   ...got some TRWs that came out of a really abused engine 
with little evident suffering other than some mashed top ring 
lands... and squashed bearings and a couple of bent rods.   If you 
don't burn them or detonate them, they'll survive some serious 
cylinder pressures.    ...more than stock rod bearings, anyway.

However, that won't keep them from failing under really high boost.

Stock cast?    All bets are off...
