You missed nothing, except my lack of experience with lates!!  You're right,
I did swap ring gears, so the carrier was an early  --  VERY early.  Based
on the other posts, my friend gave me a carrier from a 60, which used 2
shorts yokes.  I braved the heat just now and checked, and the short yoke
from the right side of my 64 works fine in the left side, too.  So I think
I'll use 2 short yokes, and pick up the proper carrier and correct the error
on the next engine pull. Thanks.

The late ring gears have 9 bolts - the earlies have 6. The carrier is the
part of the assembly that the ring gear mounts on. If you changed the
assembly, you changed the carrier. If you moved the ring gear over to the
old carrier, it cannot be a late carrier, so it shouldn't be the problem.
Have I missed something in your description, Jim?
