<VV> Breaking Spyders

I had mine break at the St. Charles Nationals (2001) in my 69 140/4/posi
during the road ralley. I was taking off from a side road on to a fast
moving 2 lane hwy, so I was definitely attempting to make a quick
entrance. After about 10 feet, the car suddenly lost forward momentum
along with a loud clank-bang-clankety-clank. After pulling to the side
of the road, I slowly let out the clutch a couple of times. Each time,
the same sound as soon as the clutch starts to grab. I called the
emergency "trailer man", who just happened to be lclc. When I described
the sounds/symptoms, he guessed it right off. I had it done at his shop
after the convention was over.

So what do spyder gears do/sound like when they break. I have a friends
65
in the driveway that is making an awful grinding. I did not take a
thorough look yet. It seems to drive ok. How quickly do they go
terminal?

Thanks
