<VV> clutch problem

Well, I finally got the '69 Fitch running and out of the garage after a 6 month overhaul. Now that it is all back together, a problem!

History: All items in clutch package, flywheel, pressure plate, disk, TO bearing, fork and pilot bearing, have 6,000 miles since 1982 without any prior problem. Everything in the bell housing and clutch package was cleaned, checked and reinstalled.

Problem: First attempt to move the car resulted in a very strange noise when the clutch pedal was raised. Not a grind, but a bit closer to a mild chattering noise more like a bad humm. This does not happen for the first 1/3 of clutch pedal movement, but for the middle third. The last third is quiet. A short test ride produced no shifting problem and no slippage, just a mild shuddering noise in the middle third of the clutch action.

Shifting without the clutch is silent.

I know I'll have to pull it apart again. Comments on what went wrong?
  A. disk in backwards? I think I know better, it is mod VEGA disk.
  B. fork improperly put on TO bearing? This worries me. Does the spring thingy go into the TO groove with the fork fingers or behind it? I cant remember, darn it, and the book does not show it.

I'll think I"ll just separate the engine from the transaxle instead of pulling the while thing this time.
