<VV> What Broke?

Hey Nigel,
Absolutely, I agree with Marc. The noise is most certainly caused by something becoming dislodged and making contact with something else as it rotates, like part of the disk, pressure plate, thowout or a backed-out bolt. As the sound goes away when you depress the clutch pedal, look for a problem with the pressure plate, the disk, or the throwout bearing.
I'd fix this sooner or later to minimize damage to the other components, if you'd expect minimum wear on relatively new components. Otherwise, I'd prepare to replace the parts you'd change in a "normal" clutch job to keep from having to go in again later.

  Nigel,

Before the experts chime in, I'll give you my somewhat educated guess. From
your description, it almost has to be clutch related. The reduction of noise
from adding oil is probably really just hopefulness on your part. My guess
is it is the pressure plate or maybe the throwout bearing hanging up.

Sorry I can't back up my opinion with years of clutch work on Corvairs, but
at least it is something to think about before the real gurus either agree
with my analysis or rip it apart :o).
