Some of those old engines made gobs of bottom end torque.  They had 
cams with almost no overlap at all and wide centerlines and profiles 
geared for low speed cylinder filling, made for very smooth running 
even when lugged.     No top end power to speak of, but they'd pull 
well at 1500 rpm in top gear, walk right up the highway.

Of course you couldn't get much of anything out of them at over 3500 
rpm but then again there wasn't any need for it.
