<VV> Air cleaners stock or individual

Has anyone noticed any improvement in performance or gas mileage, by
replacing the stock air cleaner with the small chrome individual air
cleaners, like the ones Clark's has in their supplement (page 27)?

Since my stock air cleaner needs re-chromed and it seems that the going
price for that is $75, I've been thinking of just replacing it with these
individual air cleaners for about $25 more than re-chroming. Other than
looking nice and making it easier to get to the carbs for adjustments, I was
wondering if there was anything else to gain doing this?

I know I will no longer be able to keep my spare tire back there and that
troubles me somewhat, since I don't like the idea of a loose tire in the
trunk. Are there any other negative reasons to not do this?
