Then he also mentions carying a U joint.  Everyone is entitled to carry what they want, but every one of those items are available at any FLAPS along the road.  I know I ruined my track record last year but the only thing that failed on my car that I didn't have with me was the differential.  I won't carry anything that is readily available except a set of points and condenser.  As for things you can't buy along the highway, for my Early I carry a rear axle (with bearing mounted), an idler (with new bearing), and a fan bearing already pressed into a hub.  That is enough surplus weight for anybody.  Good maintenance before you start and a good set of hand tools will take care of you after that.
