Seems like we used to put a rope around the center of the tread, with a loop
around a stick - like a figure 8 with the stick in one loop and the tire in
the other.  Turning the stick wound up the rope and tightened it around the
tire.  This squeezed the tire at the center of the tread and make the beads
move apart.  I could be dreaming.  It's been 40+ years....
