Well, it looks like I've hit a nerve here. The facts are that the filter  
just does not remove 100% of the debris going into it. Some filters will pass  
anything smaller than about .001 inches which may flow thru the bearing, but can 
 and will cause scratching and erosion. Most of the wear occurs from 
particles in  the 5-20 micron range according to filter experts. Filters are only 
about 90%  effective in removing crud.
 
Another thing is that the bypass valve is going to allow ALL oil to flow  
around the filter when a cold engine is first started so if Stephen doesn't get  
rid of all that crud, its still going to flow right into the bearings and do 
its  damage.
