<VV> no compression

Hey gang,
I have a 61 Monza 4 door. The engine was not running
well and there was a lot of white colored smoke coming
out of the exhaust. I did a compression check an
found no compression on cylinder #5.

I pulled the valve cover and found that the rocker arm
for the intake of #5 had come loose. I re-attached the
rocker arm and found that there still was no
compresssion on cylinder #5.

I then pulled the head. The top of the piston looked
good. The sides of the cylinder looked smooth and
were not scored.

I removed the valves. The valve seats looked smooth
and shiny. The intake valve was smooth and shiny.
The exaust valve was black but not scored.

Here are my questions for suggestions.

#1. If there was a broken ring, would the cylinder be
scored. I have not pulled the piston and cylinder and
would prefer not to if the problem was in the head.

#2. If the car was driven for a period of time with
the intake valve shut due to the rocker arm being off,
would that cause the head gasket to fail? (the gasket
looks the same as the other cylinders.)

#3. Would any of this caused the white smoke, or is
there another problem?

I appreciate any suggestions as to what to pursue. I
am going to have a machine shop look at the valves and
valve seats on Monday

Thanks for the help.
Daniel Stamm
