Lead (as used in gasoline) is highly toxic and cannot be safely "added"
outside a gasoline refinery. Hence nobody ever offered it as an
aftermarket additive. My brother is a (Master's level) chemist and used
toluene (sp?) back in the '70's to boost the octane for his racing
Bimmer.
