Hi Doug,
I would guess a leaking rubber hose leading into the engine 
compartment.  If these leak, they suck air and don't allow the fuel to flow 
where it can be pumped into the fuel pump and carbs.  I would replace that 
frequently overlooked item BEFORE even looking at the fuel pump.
