The reason some cams last and others don't is that they were most likely  not 
Hardened and Tempered at the same time or not processed the same, and may  
have came from a different vendor.
  It could be a number of reasons metallurgy of the raw material, the  setup 
of the Induction Hardening equipment, Temper temperature etc. and a lack  of 
Quality Control.
  They were supposed to be Hardened before being installed.
I have a Heat Treating background with Caterpillar Tractor Co. of over 30  
years.
