One thing I always check is the large rubber grommet where the battery wire 
passes through the firewall. Many times it has hardened or is completely 
missing. It doesn't take long for the sheet metal edge to cut through the 
battery cable insulation and short out. It will do some interesting damage 
along with start a fire.
