Inline fuel filters, when placed ahead of the fuel pump can keep stuff 
like rubber debris and rust flakes from disabling the fuel pump and 
leaving one stranded -- of course, if you are picking these things up in 
such a filter, additional service is indicated, but these items can also 
be dispensed into your tank at the filling station.

No,  it is not stock, unless you have a turbo, but from a purely 
practical point of view, I would reccomend them -- not to be placed near 
the exhaust.
