"From 1961 to 1972, NSU, a German auto-maker, produced compact cars that
looked just like early-series Corvairs, right down to the flying wedge roof!
And they were mechanically similar too, with rear-mounted air-cooled engines. "

Back in the mid-70's, there was an off road circuit racing series located at
the Fremont Raceway dirt track in Fremont, CA, adjacent to Fremont Dragstrip
(see American Graffiti). "RURA", the had a class for 1200cc cars. First it
was dominated by three Datsun 1200's - followed by 25 VWs. They banned the
water cooled Datsuns, specifying air-cooled only. The next year a pair of
NSU1100 TTs led the class, followed by 25 VWs. The next year the class specified
1200cc VW bugs. OH well! By the way, the fastest cars at the track were
Corvair powered Dune Buggies. One driven by Gary Kanayuer, (SP?) Who also drove at
Pikes Peak! - Seth Emerson
