There is a pipe on the front end of the engine that balances the vacuum
in the intake manifolds.  It connects under each carb with a short piece
of hose.  These hoses bake dry from engine heat and get loose, causing
air leaks and lean mixtures.  It might be that one of yours blew apart
when the engine was reversed.  If so, replace the hoses with new pieces. 
I usually use small hose clamps to make sure that things don't come
apart.
If the above doesn't solve the problem, pull the spark plugs and do a
compression test to try to localize the problem
