Here's my guess of the day....

When you did that, everything got a good jolt.  Start looking at all  
of the rubber hoses, starting with the vacuum modulator on the tranny  
and then at the other end on the balance tube up against the  
firewall.  Then the ones at the base of the carbs, then the fuel line  
in the left wheelwell.

If it runs above idle, then perhaps you have split an old hose and  
created a nice big vacuum leak.
