It would be helpful (when responding from digest mode) if you would put
something meaningful on the subject line.  Thanks.

The balancer pullers I've seen are designed to use the threaded holes on the
center portion of the balancer.  That said, I've never used one because I
cheat (carefully using two bolts through those holes) and have been lucky so
far.  There IS a risk of damaging the aluminum casting that way.

Your point - not to use a puller which "clamps" to the outer edge - is
certainly valid.
