There are only two classes of people in our car-show lives: friends, and friends we haven't met yet. Old cars are marvelous social lubricants and old car shows are wonderful places to make friends we haven't met yet, and that is why, sometimes at risk of smooshing a seat spring or two, we have always encouraged visitors to sit in our 64 Monza convert and let their minds travel to those wonderful places long ago and far away.

A case in point: The scene was Corvair Night at Old Town, a tourist attraction within rat bite distance of Disney. It attracts visitors from all over the world. About midway through the evening we were approached by a pair of Brits -- he easily identified as a Manchester United fan by his tattoos, she by her constant gushing about being raised in Iowa and being a passenger in the family Corvair.

"would you care to sit in the car,?" we asked.
  "Oh, you'd really let me?"
In she got and the tears began, intersperced with the memories which were flooding back.
As it happened, sitting was not enough. The couple begged us to stay put so they could go and buy a camera, which they did, and there followed flurry of sitting and picture taking and crying and ....well you had to be there.
We chalked it up as a good night since we truly had the couple to our 'friends' list. And all because of the availablity of the front seat of an old Corvair. It doesn't get a whole lot better than that. The Corvair certainly didn't mind, we were happy, and our British friends were ecstatic. That's why we encourage Corvair sitting wherever we go.
