My FC axle yokes show light red rust around the splines at the axle shafts
indicating some movement. Since there is already movement and the two pieces are "working" against one another is there a downside to some light lube at this point to minimize wear.

Smitty says: Bob there was not intended to be any movement at that joint. Originally was a press fit. If ignored, you will eventually end up with a spline failure. It is only a matter of time. I feel that lubing the spline will only delay the inevitable. The one thing you can do that will make it "most right" is to pull the yoke off and wet down the spline with some long molecule Loc-Tite. I am sorry I don't have an up to date number to offer you. The numbers are worn off my bottle. Go to a bearing supply house and ask for Loc-Tite bearing bedding compound. It is used to seat bearing races in worn bores. It will form a plastic bond and filler inside the spline (which will keep moisture out) which will extrude out if it becomes necessary to remove it.
