<VV> Distributor....180 Degrees off

Posting this for a friend who has no access to the Internet:

Using the "first" method mentioned here:

  http://tinyurl.com/y2hvol

He has checked the TDC on two cylinders [#1 and #2]

On both cylinders, with the rotor pointing to the respective cylinder,
he's found the TDC - however - the timing notch on the harmonic
balancer, is all the way @ the bottom ( at 6 o'clock).

I've checked the harmonic balancer and it "does not" appear to have
slipped (the marks on the inner and outer shell do line up).

  Any ideas?

Is the distributor off by 180* ? If so, why is the rotor pointing to the
  right cylinder at TDC?

Incidentally, the car starts (well....not easily) but it does and he has
timed it using that "odd" method of using number 2 (or #6 - I
can't recall which) plug wire to set the timing !!!

(using plug wire #1 - the timing mark appears near the bottom
  at 6 o'clock) !

  I'd appreciate any help.

  Regards,

  Tony
