Hi Scotty,
Well, that's really beside the point. Basically, there were two combustion  
chamber designs used on production Corvairs. One without a squish area and one  
with. Sure the combustion chamber displacement of heads using both types of 
CCs  varied, but the two designs remaind distinct. Similarily, the amount of 
squish  tended to vary for different heads using this design, but a squish area 
is still  a squish area. In heads having a relatively large squish gap, the 
gasket step  can be reduced or elininated to decrease the gap. That apparently 
is what you  are remembering.
