Geoff,
There have been reports from some of those who have elimimated the gasket  
step that over time and high mileage a buildup of residue in the chamber will  
cause/allow piston contact and resulting noise. Also, under racing conditions,  
piston expansion may possibly allow contact with residue if any exists. The  
factory always has to play it same, and design for long life and customer  
stupidity.
