Sorry.....but I have to jump in here...

The regulator  controls the Idiot light...whenever voltage is below approx. 
13.6vdc.....

The Regulator controls the Field Voltage which in turn controls the output 
voltage of the Alternator  NO CURRENT flows THRU  the Regulator [ it does in a 
GENERATOR system]

If the I light has a good bulb / wiring...then obviously the regulator is 
bad...

To test the Alt.   pull the R/F  plug on the alt and jump POSITIVE 12 vdc 
from the battery to the "F"  terminal...Alt., if good will full field [ approx. 
17vdc]  and you will hear the engine, at idle, slow down..
