The spokes leak through the rim -- tubeless tires seal from the tire 
and rim.  Not only do you need a tube, you need a hard rubber 
protector to keep the spokes from poking the tubes.  I see no harm in 
the protector nor tubes, so I just use them that way.  There is a 
special bracket to hold the spare in the correct location in the 
engine compartment.  This item is rarer than the wheels as far as I 
can tell, I have only seen 2 in my life.  Some people make replicas.
