<VV> The 3 Greatest Corvair Improvements

Just because you had a failure does not mean the part is engineered
wrong for the application. The bearing is a water pump bearing with the
fan shaft cut off. A very common bearing back in the 60's. For a while
we could buy them at a local bearing house! And, since no water leaks
through a bad seal on the Corvair application, it should last longer
than the typical water pump application! Yes, they did use a better
bearing as time wore on. Yes, the earlier ones are more prone to
throwing ball bearings at people standing looking for the funny sound
back there... ggg. But, the number that fail within 100 miles of the
start of noise is few. The number, especially late model, that roar when
cold for years is great.

And except for the turbo models, what is so hard about taking the engine
apart to do this? Ever have to change a water pump on a 70's model Ford?
Only the need for a press is difficult to accomplish on the side of the
road. That and waiting for the parts to be delivered... Better carry a
fuel pump also. And an early axle bearing assembly.

I'll list this take apart bearing as a solution looking for a real problem.
