Cost being a major factor in the production of anything. Companies like to use off the shelf items as much as possible. The Corvair fan bearing is actually a water pump assy. Up grades are common at all times during model years. Same with airplanes. which is why you have model designations. Nothing built by man is infallible. The fan bearing is quite accessable. Where was the fan bearig in question made? If it was a cheap off shore unit, you get what you pay for.
Some years ago I built a fan bearing using timkin roller bearings. It worked very nice could be greased and easilly changed. GM could never afford to build a unit like that. At least not for an inexpensive economy car.
