Not the Fastback and Squareback. They had Type 3 engines, which are
basically Type 1 engines with a crank mounted cooling blower.
The Wasserboxer isn't related. It's a totally different engine from the
Type
4.
Not to belabor this, but the Type 4 really wasn't intended as an automotive
engine, but was developed by VW's Industrial Power Group for
industrial/stationary applications. Air Products bought hundreds of them to
power cryogenic gas pumps on our truck flasks.
