I checked to make sure the rod bolts were tight and torqued them to  
30 lbs.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the shop manual says to torque  
the rod cap nuts 20-26 foot pounds.  Could that be flattening the  
plastigage more than would otherwise be expected?
