Gene-Both of mine are hooked up likewise and I have shutoff switches to shut electric one off once the carbs are filled and the car is running.  Works great when the mechanical pumps fail as they have 3 times over the years.  Ken

I also did the same ( using both pumps ) worked well for me, plus saved the  
starter while it primed the system after setting for a while.
