Yes, I remember since I did the research and wrote the article for the  
Commumique (after seeing the article mentioned by Seth). His name was Lloyd  Taylor 
(now deceased). He designed the Crosley Cobra engine and did the Corvair  
heads in a similar fashion.  This was to fabricate the heads in sheet metal  
pieces and oven-weld all of them together forming the finished product. I saw  and 
drove his water cooled LM back then around 1986.
