<VV> Odd Steering Wheel Play

While working on some turn signal problems an odd thing came to light. The steering wheel on my '64 Monza displayed what could be called excessive play (maybe 2" of free play) when the wheels were turned about half way between center and lock, but no play when they were centered. Both right and left turns showed the same amounts of play.

When driving the car I don't notice any tendency of the car to wander, but then, I mostly drive straight down the road.

The Pittman arm bushing has been replaced in the past two years, so it's unlikely that thats the cause.

The question is, Why? Is this a sign of mis-alignment, tie-rod ends in need of attention, or is it just how thing are?

Thanks in advance for any input.
