<VV> VV Muffler project for a cheapskate

I was reading all this stuff about mufflers and it got me thinking. Uh oh....! Anyway I have a LM with a single exhaust with a good but beat up muffler from being removed several times. The car is quiet but just too quiet.
I've read about the "big bore" crossovers but am too cheap to spend $200 on that. So I went to the FLAPS and bought an 2 1/4" adapter and clamp for $2.99 for my crossover. I found a FlowTec Raptor muffler (#54001)2 1/4" center in- 2 1/4" side out oval muffler for $21. This muffler was a bit shorter than the stock muffler but with the crossover adapter it was just about right. And it fit the stock hanger.
I was pretty happy with the deep mellow tone at idle and slow cruise. At 40 mph the sound mellowed even more to highway speed where it seemed as quiet as the stock muffler. By this I mean I could play the radio at half volume and still have a normal voice conversation in the car. By my standards....good. Performance wise I did not notice any low end or high end problems - seemed good both ways.
I felt like tinkering a bit more because I did not like the single turn out tailpipe so I cut the rear exhaust grill on the lower side to fit a straight out 2 1/2" drop off/angle chrome cut tailpipe ($4.99) giving it a turbo style look and fit.
On a quick cruise through downtown I noticed an immediate and considerable increase on the "thumbs up meter". For an under $30 improvement I am very satisfied with the results.
