<VV> Seal/powerpack removal

Sorry I didn't see your earlier post, but I wanted to add one thing to check
before you take everything apart. You say the seal between the diff and block
is leaking--do you mean the seal between the block and the bellhousing? If
so you might want to remove the oil pan to be sure the bellhousing gasket and
the oil pan gasket mate correctly. I once had a "new" Monza that had a
persistent leak at the bellhousing/oil pan that was caused by the prior owner not
trimming the bellhousing gasket flush with the bottom of the block on the
passenger side and leaving a gap on the drivers side, both of which caused a leak.
The solution was to remove the oil pan, trim the passenger side bellhousing
gasket flush with the oil pan mating surfaces on the bellhousing and block, and
add a little form-a-gasket to the gap on the driver's side oil pan mating
surfaces. I reinstalled the oil pan with a new gasket and the leak was cured.
I hope your leak doesn't require the removal of the powerpack, but then of
course working on Corvairs is like fishing--and God doesn't subtract for time
spent on either.
