<VV> Corvair Inventory

In addition to the question on Corvair inventory, I have another
question. How many current owners were the proud owners of a new, as
   in never before owned, Corvair?

After wrecking a VW Convertible four times (tree, telephone pole, deer
and rolled with top down), it had to go. After admiring a friends '62
and driving it, I purchased a new 1963 4 speed Convertible for about
$2400 in August 1963, just before my wife and I wed. It was a bit hard
to drive with my arm in a cast. Had a new motor installed in 1968 for
about $600 (still have the receipt somewhere). Unfortunately, in 1972
two groups of teenagers were dorking around, side swiped one another
and one of them T-boned the Corvair sitting in my driveway knocking it
into a 15 foot gully beside the house. I still have the motor and a
few of its parts. My wife told me she knew she would outlast the
Corvair and she has for 43 years. She knows she is a close #1.

I had three other Corvairs between 1972 and 1977 but was Covairless
between 1977 and 1986. Was overtook by the fever. Did not get the '64
Convertible on the road until 1989. It won a first in early
open modfied class in 1991 at the International Show in Maryland.
   Still a beauty!

My Inventory (not fleet status yet)

   1961 Wagon, 3 Speed

1962 ElVair, was a wagon now a pint sized ElCamino. customized in PA,
   A/C, Auto

1962 Rampside, 4 speed, until recently resided in SanDiego

   1964 Convertible, 4 speed

All with Antique License Plates and operated as such! And yes, all
   earlies.

Also a 1964 VW Notchback (for sale), 1977 International Scout (Code
Red for termite damage control), 1987 ElCamino - operational but not
   licensed

   Vairly yours,

   Ray Davis

   Hartwood, VA

They can't call you Lonny, that's me!! I hope nobody tries to buy
     parts from
me, I don't have many extras.
     Lonny
PS: My whole name is Lonny Clark, so I can't sell my Corvair - it
     would
cause a rip in the fabric of the universe.

Spot on Frank! I couldn't have said it better myself. Besides that,
     everyone
knows that Californians all drive Hummers, Lambo's and Ferrari's,
     so they
     have mechanics on retainer.

Love the OBD II systems. My wife's Windstar was tossing a code,
     (both banks
too lean), and after cleaning and testing the obvious (MAF,
     throttle body,
etc), I stumbled upon a tech note regarding intake manifold bolts
     being held
in place with bolts with rubber seals. A little more research and I
     found
out that Ford did a production change to the rubber seals. Seems
     the seals,
when exposed to the oil/vapors from the PCV system, were breaking
     down and
allowing air into the charge. $80 later, and about 4 hours of
     labor, and I
was back on the road with a green board. Wouldn't have even know
     that I had
a problem without the OBD II. If you're thinking about buying one,
     buy the
best one you can afford. Sometimes, knowing only what the code is,
     isn't
enough. Stepping up to the second tier gives you the ability to
     reset codes
and monitor engine function while driving (especially good for
     troubleshooting O2 sensor problems).

     Hey guys,
They seem to be crawling out of the woodwork!
A few years back I had the steering wheel cover for one of these(3
     spoke
piece with the horn buttons)... it was blue... I might still have
     it, but my
parts are still scattered in 3 different counties...

     Mark
     While I lived in VA (89-97) I didn't encounter much rip-offs by
     inspection stations.
Of course, it's also important to know where to go.
I did most all the repair business I couldn't do on my own at BRT
service in Va Beach. Owned, operated and staffed by Born-Again
Christians, they didn't rip people off. One of my neighbors worked
there, and turned me on to the place.
I sent a friend of mine there who the BMW dealer told he needed a
new oil pump, about a 800.00 job all told. BRT replaced his oil
pressure sending unit, checked his oil pressure, sent him away with
a parts and labor bill for 70.00 Even HE couldn't believe it.
Then again, while working at Western Auto (still a SIGH), one of
our regular customers (known as "the Chaplain of Aragona Village"
for being a busybody), came to me and told me the Goodyear store in
the Pembroke Mall failed his truck on inspection for bad shocks. We
had installed top of the line Monroe HD shocks on his 80's model
     F-150 not 6 months before.
I bounced the bumpers, and the car stopped bouncing immediately. I
got under with a flashlight and checked for leaking oil/bad
seals. Nothing. I called the SGT at the VA State Police barracks
in Chesapeake(that handled the inspection stations), and told him
what I'd found. The SGT requested that the owner bring the truck
by for HIM to take a look. The SGT asked the owner to accompany
him to the Goodyear store. The SGT went inside, took the
inspection certificate from both the inspector and the store, and
told the Manager---THAT'S IT FOR YOU---1 YEAR SUSPENSION.
Now as has been mentioned, the inspecting location don't make much
if anything off an inspection in VA---BUT when you can't do them,
you can't sell or install any parts you find bad (or lie to the
customer that they're bad) to make any income off the job. It can
put a dent in any repair business. Best to be honest.
My inspector Dennis at BRT would ask me questions when doing a
Corvair, he'd been a mechanic for about 7 years, but admitted
     ignorance re: the Corvair.
Example--when I put four tailight lenses on my car (changed the
bulbs and sockets to double contact for 1157 bulbs, and
wired jumpers to have all 4 come on at once-- He asked me "Where's
your backup lights?" And I told him in 1965 they were still
optional--same when he asked me about the rear seatbelts.
After he checked the book, he came back and said "I'll take your
word on this stuff from now on". At the next TCC meeting I told
the rest of the club if they wanted a no-hassle inspection on their
     Vair, take it to BRT.
Could work for any grouping of clubbies.

___OK, new thread here's my information:
     Guy Brandes
CCE, CORSA, 30 years a service manager(yes we work on emission
     systems),
competitive shooter, Civil War buff, gun collector and I still play
     with
     model trains. I have a 56 Monza 4DOOR with a4 speed and a 140
     engine.
I have only one because I have a wife who doesn't appreciate my
     many and
expensive hobbies. If you break down in Palatine you can tow it to
     my
house and pick it up when you want.
     Regards,
     Guy Brandes

PS I hope to be at the CORSA convention this summer so you can take
     me
to task for misbehaving on VV. I have not been on VV long enough
     to
     appreciate the established protocol.

Ebay seems to be the place for that as they are frequently listed
     there.
