Actually, we did. After WWII, we could build more stuff at better quality  
and lower cost than ANYONE. The war enhanced our manufacturing capability, where 
 it destroyed everyone else's. 
However, the world isn't static. Obviously. 
Just installed a Fujitsu minisplit heat pump. Marvelous piece of  technology, 
from the People's Republic of China...

in  large quantities, something we really never learned how to do.  Even our  
Sanyo (Japanese) vacuum cleaner was made in China!  The Chinese cars  will be 
a real threat when they start  coming.
