i have soaked them in carb cleaner ,  wire wheeled them , and even glass 
beaded them. just depends on my mood and how bad it really is.
but the color on several originals seems to be some sort of a  dark gray.  
then a lot were black.  being the non purist that i is   i always end up 
painting them with the same semi gloss balck i use on the shrouds.  at least they are 
clean.
and  thanks for the gas heater site...
it was minus 4 degrees this morning here in central ny..
