<VV> oil leak

got my engine out last weekend and have the bellhousing here at work to 
clean--dont see any damage to the seal but will replace--found a slight burr 
on the outer edge of the crank where the seal goes over--looks like whoever 
built this engine used some kind of sealer on the seal where it taps into 
the bellhousing--is this necessary or is this a dry fit?the leak was engine 
oil and not diff--
