Hi Cash,

My guess would be that the fiberous stuff is the remains of the fuel pickup
sock in the gas tank.  I would put an inline filter in the same place Matt
suggested, at the outlet of the gas tank and use a metal one.  Too much heat
and vibration back at the engine end.  The only filter GM put back there was
on the turbo, two of the three connections were flare fittings and it was
bolted in place.  A thorough disassembly of the carbs is in order, those
fibers as Geoff pointed out could have gone farther than the main jet.  Now
would be a good time to just order rebuild kits and go through them while
you have them apart.  With an inline filter, you shouldn't have to do it
again for a long time.
