Hi guys, just joined Virtual Vairs last week and have been reviewing the
replies. My first test reply here:

I bought a used '66 Corsa late one fall, and quickly noticed that inside
my oil filler cap was a creamy white sludge. This was an indication that
the engine was overcooling and the water of combustion was mixing with
the oil, due to the cylinder walls being too cool. This can happen
during the winter in a water-cooled engine without a thermostat, too.

An inspection of the rear thermostats revealed that they were
disconnected, probably earlier that summer by the previous owner.

To be safe, I bought two new thermostats and hooked everything back up
and changed the oil. Within a few days, all evidence of the creamy
deposit was gone and the engine was running at the correct temps. It was
opening up the chokes sooner and of course was warming up much quicker
than before.

So yes, an engine can suffer from overcooling, but only in really cold
weather, where it would affect the oil condition first.
