It could be coming from the engine compartment or up front.  Is your gas cap 
the correct one?  Check for leaks with the engine running.  The vapor return 
line on your '69 sends vapors/gas back to the tank filler neck and if any of 
the connections are bad you will have a strong smell of gas.  The "usual 
suspects" in the engine compartment should be checked with the engine running as 
should the gas line connections (especially in the left rear wheel area).  At 
least the leak shouldn't be too hard to find.
