Absolute nonsense!

As EVERYONE else who has travelled extensively and made reservations at 
hotels, my experience has been that the card number is sufficient.  

Then I submit that you haven't been involved in many
Conventions/Conferences!  It's fairly SOP.  Don't want to "deal" with
it...book the room in your own name and pay the "normal" freight for the
rather than the "convention" rate!  Quid Pro Quo!
