<VV> The price of synthetic oil...

Bob,

Thanks for the legal update. Hadn't heard about it, but it figures.
Sounds a little like what Congress did with the name "olympic" back a
number of years ago. Seems the gay community was organizing an "olympic"
set of athletic competitions for gay athletes, and Congress got miffed
about it. So they passed a law that handed the USOC and IOC exclusive
rights to the name "olympic", which allowed the USOC/IOC to sue the Gay
Olympics. Ever since it's had to be called the "Gay Games." Odd though,
since the USOC/IOC sued almost nobody else over it. They didn't even sue
the Olympia Brewing Company. And they STILL haven't sued the "Special
Olympics", probably because the PR on it would make them look like the
Grinch. LOL

So how can they get away with calling it "synthetic?" Sounds like
another case of being lied to.

Thought you knew the story. Back around 1993, Mobil 1 was a true
synth using a build up of chemicals to achieve their product.
At the same time Chevron had perfected a new hydrocracking process
for crude that resulted in a superbly refined oil. Castrol
   syntec became aware of

Chevron's new oil and started using it and calling Syntec a synthetic
oil.

Mobil took Castrol to court for misrepresenting their oil as a synth.
However the court decided in Castrol's favor stating
that......SYNTH OIL WAS NOT DEFINED BY HOW IT WAS MADE OR FROM WHAT IT
WAS MADE, BUT BY ITS PROPERTIES.
It turned out that Castrol Syntec had many of the same properties that
real synth had.
So now, since synth made from crude is cheaper than synth made like
Mobil did,
Almost everybody is making "synth" like Castrol did...from crude.

Bob Helt
