Finch painted the ends of the push rod tubes nearest the heads white VHT to reflect and insulate the PR tubes from the exhaust tube heats to protect the ORINGS, not to cool oil. He also made little metal baffles/reflectors to keep the heat away from the orings. We don't seem to really have to do this because it turns out the Viton can handle the heat they get without these precautions. Back then, I guess it wasn't so well known and there was a lot of paranoia about heat and orings because of the old rubber ones getting hard so fast.

The car world is funny, it's so FULL of opinions that are expressed as FACT by people. Over on Corvair Center they just had a discussion on oil - that's the worst subject for strong opinions without a lot of hard data. Funny.
