A friend who is an alumnus of NYIT (NY Inst. of Technology) shared his
Spring 2007 alumnae magazine with me because on page 36 is a black & white picture
of the shell of a '65 Corvair coupe almost vertically on it's nose in front
of a campus building dangling from the end of an extended back hoe. The
caption reads; "THE AUTOMOBILE OF THE 21ST CENTURY...IN  1973".  The text reads;
"Electrically powered cars may be a familiar sight today, but in 1973 they
were rare indeed--unless, of course, you were an NYIT student. In this photo,
engineering students under the direction of Professor Edward Kafrissen, Ph.D.,
lower a 1965 General Motors Corvair into the machine shop inside Harry
Schure Hall at the Old Westbury campus. They later removed the engine and
installed an electric motor with a rechargeable battery. More than 30 years late,
NYIT students are just as determined to shape the future." Despite what it
says, the engine had obviously already been removed before the car was lowered
into the building. Maybe someone looking at the picture in the 21st century
thought that big hole in the back of the car was the trunk!
