 Can the fuel pump rod be worn? (if so can it be removed 
without disassembling part of the engine?

  Smitty says:  My vote would be for fuel line restriction.  If you go farther and check the stroke of the fuel pump cam/pushrod, don't make the common mistake of expecting to see the rod jumping up and down like an oil field pump.  It only moved about .037 of an inch when it was new.  Access to the cam is by removing the rear casting of the engine.
