<VV> Fuel tank question

A correctly calibrated (probably very few at this point) sending unit/gauge 
combination will read E when there is 4 gallons in the tank (which holds 14 
gallons).

Here is a strange question.  I just filled my 69 vert today, it was below 
1/4 on the guage but only took 7.8 gallons to fill.  The gauge reads full. I 
always manually fill the tank w/o the pump hold down since it always 
splashed back quite a bit of gas.  I slowly filled till it kicked off.
